It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the first Joint Symposium on Mountain Medicine and Avalanche Rescue (JOSMAR) in Norway.

Mountaineering and wilderness travel in Norway and Scandinavia attracts thousands of people every year, both summer and winter. Norway can boast of a magnificent mountain area almost 6 times the size of the Alps. In addition, our coastline is vast and weather-beaten. An increasing number of Scandinavians travel to high altitude. Venturing in these environments require experience, skill and knowledge.

Nevertheless, accidents do, and will continue to happen. Weather and complex accidents may provide extremely challenging situations, both for the patient and the rescue crew. Preparing for these situations is difficult.

Only by developing and practicing a wide set of techniques and applicable tools, along with general mountaineering experience, can we increase our ability to provide better medical care and more efficient rescue in the mountains.

The Norwegian Society of Mountain Medicine has formerly arranged an annual one-day seminar (Fjellmedisinsk Seminar) on a variety of subjects on mountain and wilderness medicine.

Inspired by the increasing interest from both professionals and the public, along with increased national experience from both research and hands-on experience, we aspire to work even harder to acquire updated knowledge and share the skills and know-how on mountain medicine and avalanche rescue.

In April 2008 we’ll take these aspirations to the next level.

See you in Hemsedal!
