Joint Symposium on Mountain Medicine and Avalanche Rescue - JOSMAR 2008
home > Personal equipment

All workshops will be outside in spring winter conditions. The temperature may range from -5°C to +15, depending on the weather. Wind will increase the sensation of cold. You will be working on snow all day, and you will experience both high- and low intensity work. We will use the ski lift for transportation into the mountains and there will be a little walking (max 100 meters) between the workshop locations. When the day is over you will have to ski down to the bottom of the ski resort. This means you should have the necessary skills for safely descending down a groomed slope with code marking blue. For those very uncomfortable on skies, there is a possibility to either take the last lift down or arrange for a car pick-up on a closer location.

You will need:

  • Warm, wind and weather-proof mountain clothes. A down jacket is nice to have.

  • Ski-touring, or telemark skies, including skins (feller). Alpine skies or snowboard + snowshoes (truger) may also be used.

  • Warm and comfortable skiing boots.

  • Avalanche transceiver, shovel and avalanche probe (søkestang)

  • Sunglasses and sun screen

  • 2 pairs of gloves or mittens

  • Warm hat

  • Thermos and water bottle

  • If you have a first aid kit; bring it

  • Backpack

  • A small sleeping mat is useful

You may rent snowshoes at Norske Opplevelser in Hemsedal for a cost at NOK 150 pr day. Contact info:
